Commonly known as ‘The Nine Days Queen’, Lady Jane Grey has never enjoyed the same Tudor fame or attention as her cousin Elizabeth I, or her great uncle, Henry VIII.
But, who is the young woman and why is her place in Tudor history still debated?
When her young cousin, King Edward VI, died in 1553, Jane inherited a crown that she never wanted and shortly after, was convicted of crimes that were not of her doing. But the way she lived her life before becoming queen, the incredible intelligence and fortitude she showed during her short reign, and her bravery in the months leading up to her death show us that she was an extraordinary person, and would have been an extraordinary first Queen Regnant of England.
Through her letters and writings, she tells us very clearly how she would like to be remembered. And we aim to tell her story truthfully and celebrate her life, her reign, and her memory.
Long Live Jane the Quene. -Paige Cutrona, 2024
JANE the QUENE is a new dramatic song cycle for voice and piano which I have composed with lyrics and book by Paige Cutrona. Over the course of nine movements, using her own writings as well as bible passages and some of her favorite Plato for context, we hope to tell Jane’s unlikely, inspiring, and all-together moving story faithfully- emotionally resonating with audiences of today. This video offers a brief survey of the political landscape of her time: the days leading up to her nine as Queen. Below, you’ll also find background and context for each of the nine movements.
